Child protection training

From 1 January 2012, all nominated supervisors and any certified supervisor (person with a supervisor certificate) who is placed in day to day charge of an education and care service in NSW must have completed an approved course in child protection.

 


Qualifications for educators

Under the NQF, there will be new requirements about qualified staff. These are:

Type of service Qualification Starting date

Centre based service educating and caring for children preschool age or under

At least 50% of the educators required to meet ratio requirements must have or be working towards at least an approved Diploma level qualification.

 

All other educators who are required to meet ratio requirements must have or b working towards at least a Certificate III level qualification.

Family day care service

Educators must have or be working towards at least a Certificate III level qualification.

Family day care coordinators must have at least an approved Diploma level education and care qualification.

First aid qualifications

Under the NQF, at least one of the educators in attendance at a centre-based service, and all family day care educators, must have an approved first aid qualification and, from 2013, have been trained in asthma and anaphylaxis management.


Educator to child ratios

Under the National Regulations, the following educator to child ratios will apply in NSW:

Family day care services

  • 1:7 for each family day care educator
  • Until 31 December 2013 not more than 5 of the children can be preschool age or under.
  • From 1 January 2014 not more than 4 of the children can be preschool age or under.
