Education for a Changing World examines the strategic implications that advances in technology will have for education.

The project aims to stimulate informed discussions about the policies and reforms that may need to be set in motion now to ensure education best prepares young people to successfully navigate a more complex world.

The evidence of change

Many experts are predicting that technological developments, including in artificial intelligence (AI), robotics and automation, are going to transform the way we live and work, on a scale similar to the industrial revolution.

The evidence is building that young people today will face a very different world when they finish school. Many of the jobs their parents do may soon be automatable or AI-augmented. They may be the last generation who will need to learn how to drive a car.

It has always been the role of educators to think about what today's young people need to succeed in tomorrow's world. But the pace and breadth of change created by AI means that future thinking matters more now than ever before.

What and how we teach over the next 10 years will come into sharp focus as we determine the best way to prepare students for this rapidly changing world. This isn't just a challenge for schools – this is a challenge for all of education, for industry, and for communities as a whole.

Discussion paper

The project's first discussion paper explores some of the department's initial thinking about the challenges of the big technological, economic, demographic and social shifts occurring around the globe.
