Top athletes honoured

Blaxland High graduate, Jessica Fox and Blayney High's Kurt Fearnley ranked among the top honours in the inaugural Australian Institute of Sport Performance Awards celebrated at Melbourne Museum last night.

Jessica, who topped the state in PD/health/PE and scored an ATAR of 99.1 in her HSC at Blaxland High in 2011, was named 2014 Athlete of the Year.

2014 Sport Personality of the Year went to inspiring wheelchair athlete, Kurt Fearnley who in his book Pushing the Limits pays tribute to Blayney High's role in his development.

An Olympian, Paralympian and highly decorated wheelchair marathon racer, Kurt last year won his fifth New York Marathon and now has his sights set firmly on representing the green and gold in Rio.

A regular visitor to his old school since completing his HSC in 1998, Kurt most recently returned to Blayney High to reminisce in an episode of Julia Zemiro's Home Delivery.

Jessica last year made history as the first canoe slalom athlete claiming gold in two disciplines - C1 canoe and K1 kayak - at the world championships in Deep Creek Lake, Maryland in the USA.

The multiple world champion made her Olympic debut in London in 2012 where she scored a silver medal in the K1 class.
