New working with children checks

Background checks on people working with children will be simpler and safer under new legislation tabled today.

The new Working With Children Check will be the same for all those working with children, including paid workers, the self-employed, volunteers, carers or other adults living in a foster carer's house.

Access to broader criminal histories will result in one of two outcomes – a clearance or a bar – a change from the current system where some employers can choose whether to employ a high risk person.

Another improvement will be the continuous monitoring of NSW criminal records rather than the current requirement for workers to be checked only at recruitment.
