NSW Government welcomes Gonski review

The NSW Minister for Education, Adrian Piccoli, has welcomed the Gonski review of school funding, saying it offers the opportunity to rethink Australia's commitment to schooling and the importance of a high quality school education.

Mr Piccoli said the NSW Government supports a key position of the review that, "Every child should have access to the best possible education, regardless of where they live, the income of their family, or the school they attend".

He said Australia needed a school funding system that could lift attainment across schools, irrespective of whether they were public or private.

"Schools with higher needs should receive additional funds, regardless of what sector they are in," Mr Piccoli said.

The Minister said the NSW Government believed meeting minimum standards of literacy and numeracy were no longer a high enough ambition for students and schools.

"To compete internationally, higher standards are needed, and any national resourcing standard must be aimed at meeting these standards."
