Minister’s Award for Excellence in Teaching

Minister's Award for Excellence in Teaching

In the early 1990s Jennifer English walked away from teaching convinced she had chosen the wrong career.

Last week proof she was mistaken in that belief came when Ms English was named one of the state's leading educators.

The turnaround came after she took on a job as an administrative assistant for a science inspector with the NSW Board of Studies. Under their tutelage she gained inside tips on classroom management and student behavior, and armed with her new skills decided to return to the classroom.

Ms English, head science teacher at Figtree High School, along with 24 other outstanding school and TAFE NSW educators, was honoured at the 2013 Minister's Award for Excellence in Teaching.

The award acknowledges quality teachers and teaching in departmental preschools, primary and secondary schools and TAFE institutes.

A rich variety of skills, interests and capabilities

Education Minister Adrian Piccoli said he was impressed by the rich variety of skills, interests and capabilities the recipients demonstrated that had gained the respect of their colleagues, students and communities.

"Everyone here today knows that teaching is the single-largest factor of educational success. What teachers know, do, and care about has a powerful and enduring influence on student learning," Mr Piccoli said.

"I am proud these awards provide an opportunity to recognise exceptional teaching practice."

Ms English said she was overwhelmed by the acknowledgement because she was "just doing her job".

"Part of what I do is mentor in every faculty in behaviour management and classroom structures ... and that's really important to me," she said.

"I love what I do and am passionate about it. I think others recognised that. That's ultimately why I was nominated and selected for the award."
