Back to school website launched

21 January 2013

Minister for Education Adrian Piccoli today launched the Department of Education and Communities' new Back to school 2013 website.

"Back-to-school advice for parents across a range of important areas is only a mouse click away," Mr Piccoli said.

"The new website will offer information about how families can best prepare for the new school year.

"More than 745,000 students start back at 2,223 public schools from Wednesday 30 January.

"This can be an anxious time, particularly for parents sending their children to school for the first time, or who have children starting high school.

"I encourage any parents with questions to visit the website at to source information such as:

  • tips for parents and students on starting pre-school, starting primary school and moving from primary to high school
  • answers to frequently asked questions about uniforms, school fees and homework
  • links to the Department's School A to Z resource
  • Government school term and holiday dates.

Back to school hotline

Further assistance will be available on the Back to School Hotline - 1300 738 338 - which also offers information about how families can best prepare for the new school year. The Hotline will be available between 8.30am and 4.30pm weekdays from Thursday 24 January until Friday 15 February.

Dedicated staff will be on hand to answer any questions about how best to prepare children for school - all for the cost of a local landline call. (Normal mobile phone charges apply.)

School starting dates

Parents are encouraged to call their local school from 29 January with any questions they have on individual schools' starting dates and times.
Students in the far west of New South Wales start a week later (from Wednesday 6 February), and a list of these schools can be found at
