Mark Scott's Update

01 September 2016

We are always learning

It's great to be able to join you today as Secretary of the Department of Education.

As you can imagine, I have lots to learn in this new role and look forward to your help.

I have a background in education: first as a teacher, then working in policy and also as an education journalist. Most recently, though, I led the ABC through some very significant changes as it responded to the challenges of the new digital era.

When I first started at the ABC, I had never spent any time in broadcasting but was lucky to learn so much by working closely with staff and drawing from their experience and insights. They had all the great ideas.

I hope to have the same opportunity here at the Department. I am so looking forward to learning more about early childhood education and Aboriginal Affairs and visiting schools to see firsthand how to best support teachers and principals to enable them to do their best.

I know that remarkable work is being undertaken every day in our public schools, to give the children in our care every opportunity to flourish. New money is being invested, new targeted programs implemented and there is a clear focus on teaching and learning.

The work we do is vital to the future of all these children and those who will follow – and to the future of our communities and our country. It is why I leapt at the opportunity to support public education and work for our public schools in this position.

With 86,000 staff, I cannot guarantee I am going to master everyone's names! However, I do hope I can get to meet and talk with many of you in the time ahead. If you see me around, be sure to say hello. I want to set up opportunities where I can hear your views, learn from your insights and work closely with you all to further strengthen our public schools and the quality of teaching and learning on offer every day.

You can see some of the things I am thinking about on Facebook (@mark.scottfeedback) and Twitter (@mscott).

I am very pleased to be here and working with you all.
